Comprehensive Design, Lead Landscape Designer
Jenny comes from a long line of gardeners so when she decided to make a career change in 2002, Landscape Design seemed like a natural choice. Since she has been in the green industry she has worked at several garden centers but has primarily worked for design/build firms. Jenny joined Lurvey in 2016 and her designs are both thoughtful and detailed. She enjoys designing hardscapes, as well as landscapes, and utilizes native and pollinator-friendly plants.
Jenny has a BA in Food Science and Nutrition with a minor in Biology. Also, she has an Associate’s degree in Ornamental Horticulture, with certificates in Landscape Design and Sustainable Landscaping from the College of DuPage. In her free time, Jenny enjoys gardening, bike riding, and ballroom dancing.
Front Yard Design Express
Thom’s affinity for nature stems from his childhood exploration of the woods, quarries, and streamsides around his home in the Catskill Mountains of New York. After completing an Associate's Degree in Horticulture at the State University of New York - Cobleskill, Thom went on to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Thom also did some post-graduate work in Restoration Ecology at the University of Wisconsin.
Thom made the move to Chicago in 2003 and worked at an area garden center in sales and design. In 2012, he began working at Lurvey. He very much enjoys the process of designing in real-time collaboration with the customer through the Design Consult Service that is now the Front Yard Express Design Service.
Thom loves when he can be creative using regionally appropriate perennials, grasses, and shrubs in the front yard setting to negotiate a clean yet free-spirited look; respecting the scale and features of the house as well as delivering reduced maintenance and longevity as a requirement. Thom brings together his love of nature and knowledge of horticulture, design, and construction to deliver elegantly styled landscapes.
Luz started at Lurvey in the spring of 2004 and worked as a cashier, at the service counter, in sales, and as a landscape designer. Through the Chicago Botanic Garden, she earned four certificates including Landscape Design, Ornamental Plant Materials, Professional Gardener Level 1, and Professional Gardener Level 2.
She became the primary designer for In-Store Design Consultations in 2014, moving to the Comprehensive Design team in 2016. To date, she has completed over 150 designs for Lurvey clients. Luz loves to create naturalistic landscapes that incorporate color, texture, and year-round interest in a low-maintenance design. Shade gardens are a favorite of hers.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Luz moved to the U.S. at age 2. She is married with 3 adult children and lots of pets.
Donna has been a Lurvey employee since 2006. Using her degrees – a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Master Gardener certificate, and progress towards a Master’s Degree in Horticulture as well as personal experience – Donna creates aesthetically pleasing landscapes while balancing environmental and practical requirements. With a focus on year-round color and beauty, including native and native cultivars where possible, Donna designs in a wide range of clean, easy to maintain landscape styles.
Phyllis grew up on a farm in southern Illinois. Though her career started in education as a teacher, her roots eventually surfaced, and gardening became her passion. Once her career path changed, she obtained two professional certificates in Garden Design and Horticulture from the Chicago Botanic Garden. Since graduating in 2013, she has enjoyed helping create beautiful spaces for clients through designs, plant selection, sales, and horticultural advice. She is still teaching, but now it is teaching homeowners about plants. She is especially happy when homeowners plant gardens themselves. Playing in the dirt is so satisfying and sharing that love with others gives her joy.
She loves to spend time in her own garden noticing the seasonal changes and beauty of the natural world. Visiting the Chicago Botanic Garden and forest preserves is also a favorite pastime. Observing nature is a wonderful inspiration for her designs.
